Highly purified human C3a was isolated and used to immunize rabbits. The Anti-Human C3a polyclonal antisera was tested by immunodiffusion methods and determined to be monospecific for the C3a protein.

C3a is generated as the result of cleavage of complement protein C3 by soluble C3-convertase during activation of the complement system via the classical, lectin or alternative pathway. The anaphylatoxin C3a in serum is then rapidly cleaved into the more stable C3a-desArg. The detection of C3a-desArg therefore provides a reliable evalsuation of the level of complement activation.

Applications of the Anti-Human C3a antisera have been evalsuated, and include immunodiffusion, Western Blot and ELISA.
